 Department of Bio-Technology
In the academic year 2003, the Department of Biotechnology made its debut in the Oxford College of Engineering, a most prestigious Institution in the BT hub, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) , approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and Accredited by National Board of Accreditation.
The Department of Biotechnology gained accreditation status from National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, in the year 2009. Initially the students’ intake was 30 and increased to 60 since the academic year 2008.
Research and Development Centre of the department has been approved by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, in the year 2008. Under this program, several innovative projects, funded by various sources are being carried out in a well equipped research center of the department. Besides pursuing cutting edge research, the faculty is involved in publishing national & international papers. Dedicated senior faculty members with sound industry and academic background are guiding the students to mold them as budding scientists.
Ph. D. Program: R & D Centre at the department of Biotechnology provides excellent opportunities for pursuing Ph.D. degree in various fields under the eligible supervisors in the department. Three staff members are registered for full-time Ph.D. program under the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
 M Tech Program: M Tech in Bioinformatics program has started from the academic year 2010-11.
Results: The department has the trend of getting outstanding results in both UG and PG programs of almost 100% in the University examinations with maximum distinctions.
The department constantly seeks to provide a responsive learning environment and creative thinking that enables the students to achieve their highest level of proficiency in their academic career and a better employment in the diverse areas of most rapidly expanding BT industry. To achieve this vision, the mission has been designed carefully to provide students, both theoretical knowledge and practical hands on skills in the most demanding fields of BT.
Industry-academia interaction is given a prime importance. The guest lectures by eminent scientists and industrial visits are constantly been organized. Several state level and National level seminars and conferences have been organized. To strengthen the hands on experience, technical workshops are conducted during every semester as value added programs.
Keeping in mind the all round growth of the students, the academic curriculum is well balanced with extra and co curricular activities. Innovative ideas of staff and students have reflected in winning several laurels to the Institute. The academic performance report of the ward is sent to the parents/guardians by post at the end of every month. Students having academic problems are counseled regularly by the experienced faculty and extra coaching classes are given to the weaker students which enable them to perform better in the examinations.
To enhance the professional knowledge of the staff members and students, the internet lab is facilitated with 4Mbps dedicated line from Reliance, providing unlimited internet access even after college hours. Students are provided with smart campus cards through which they can transact the library books, access to their attendance, internal assessment marks and also get the information regarding the placement openings.
To cater the present needs of BT industry, students work in well equipped labs having high end equipments. Some of these labs are; Biochemistry lab, Unit operations lab, Cell & Molecular Biology lab, Microbiology Lab, Genetic Engineering and Immuno-technology lab, Bioinformatics lab, Bioprocess Control and Automation lab, Biokinetics and Enzymology lab, Upstream processing lab and Downstream processing lab.
Excellent team of highly qualified and dedicated staff members headed by Dr. Kusum Paul whose unquestionable commitment, sincere involvement and never dying enthusiasm is instrumental in shaping all round growth of the department.
