APPLIED GENETICS

Department started:
B.Sc. – 2000-2001 with 9 students
M.Sc.-- 2003-2004 with 02 students

  1. Started with just 9 students had reached to a total of upto 650 students.
  2. Was started with one combination CZGt (Chemistry, Zoology, Genetics),  in  2002-2003 C Gt Bt and in 2003-2004  BcGtBt and BcGtMb were also introduced.
  3. Started with just one lab, then increased to 2 at J.P. Nagar Campus, and now Genetics Department has 4 spacious labs (2 for UG students and 1 for PG students with one research lab). These 4 labs are provided with one chemicals storeroom one each for 2 labs, one instruments room and one culture room. The labs are well equipped with all newer equipments.
  4. The results has always been the highlight of the Dept. The dept. has always maintained its results above 90%, 100% First class are a common achievement in M.Sc.
  5. In 2008-2009 batch of M.Sc. Applied Genetics has registered 100% first class along with 4 university ranks (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th)
  6. Many of our M.Sc. students are pursuing their higher education abroad after qualifying GRE with good scores.
  7. In 2008-2009, 4 students have cleared UGC- CSIR NET qualifying exam.

Facilities

  • Well-equipped binocular and trinocular (with camera attached) microscopes.
  • Good culturing facilities for eg. Drosophila, Mosquito, Microbial and Plant Tissue culture.
  • We have all the facilities required to perform high end experiments in genetic engineering and bio-medical genetics.

Placements
Reliance life science, Raghavendra Biotech, Different IVF clinics( like Gunasheela) Manipal Health care, Narayana hrudayalaya, Agricultural University (Gujrat), Institution of reproductive medicine- Quintaills, Zydus Cadilla.

Activities

  • Industrial visits – students have been taken out on industrial / Institutional visits like GKVK, UB group, Bangalore Dairy, IIHR, Namdhari seeds etc.
  • Students are encouraged to attend seminars / conferences conducted by various institutions and participate in inter collegiate competition.
  • Students have taken up project works in reputed institutions like NIMHANS, KIDWAI, St. Johan’s medical college, etc.
