Chemistry department under The Oxford College of Science have started in 1994 with B.Sc. Chemistry, Microbiology, zoology combinations and the PG Department of Chemistry in 2009 which has evolved in terms of academics and co-curricular and extra curricular activities.

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT
To impart value education with morals of high standards and good ethical practices in this era of global warming and terrorism, thereby producing good well trained chemists practicing GREEN CHEMISTRY for the betterment of Universe.

SCOPE OF CHEMISTRY

  1. M.Sc., Chemistry:
    It is a 2 year, 4 semesters full time master degree course, affiliated to Bangalore university, Bangalore & recognized by Govt. of Karnataka.

  2. B.Sc., Chemistry:
    It is a 3 year, 6 semesters full time bachelor degree course, affiliated to Bangalore university, Bangalore & recognized by Govt. of Karnataka.

Specific objectives of the courses:  

  • To provide in-depth knowledge in Chemistry in accordance with recent advances & research.
  • To train students to be competitive enough to be employed by pharmaceutical, fermentation, food & dairy industries, diagnostic labs & research institutions in India & abroad.

Eligibility criteria:

  • M.Sc., Organic Chemistry:
    The candidate must have secured 40% marks in aggregate & have studied chemistry (cognate subject) securing 50% marks in this subject at the B.Sc level & studied mathematics at 10+2 or pre university level.
  • B.Sc.,
    The candidate must have secured 40% marks in aggregate at 10+2 or pre university level.

Admission procedure:
Admission to the course is decided by the marks obtained in the qualifying examination, followed by personal interview.

Syllabus & examination procedure:
As prescribed by the Bangalore university. The prospectus will give detailed information.

FACILITIES:
Classroom & lab facilities:
  • Classes conducted using chalk and board, overhead projector & power point presentation.
  • Spacious & comfortable classrooms with good ventilation & lighting.
  • Series of well equipped 3 laboratories with fumigation chamber, instrumentation room, , pH  meters, colorimeters, centrifuge, well loaded store room with chemicals & necessary glassware.
  • Research lab for research work in Chemistry.
  • Smart campus facility for the students.

Activities of the department:

  1. Guest lectures conducted with talks by eminent scholars in the field of chemistry
  2. Seminars conducted on frontier areas in chemistry.
  3. Organization of science workshops.
  4. Industrial visits are conducted.
  5. Interclass & inter-college cultural & academic competitions conducted.
  6. Research in natural product extraction, spectroscopy, synthetic chemistry, polymer science, fuel cells, etc., are conducted.
  7. Placement opportunities & guidance offered through the department.

CERTIFICATE COURSE OF 2011:

  1. “Glimpses into the polymer world” was conducted for all PG and UG students and staff of The Oxford College of Science by Dr. Lakshmi Raghunathan.

ENRICHMENT COURSE OF 2011:

  1. Phenomenon of radioactivity,” was conducted by Assoc. Prof. Shanthala and V.Shivarudrappa, Ex. Scientist G, BARC

VALUE ADDED COURSE OF 2011:

  1. Electrochemical   energy conversions –  Fuel cells and battery by Dr Shailly Rajusth
  2. Fuels by Dr. Lakshmi Raghunathan.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  1. Both UG and PG courses are designed to give the students adequate theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for a leading chemist.
  2. With the phenomenal growth in frontier areas of food, health, Pharma, cosmetics, paints, textiles, electronics, materials industry several opportunities await these students
  3. Opportunities exist for higher studies both in India and abroad and one could diversify/specialize into advance areas leading to careers in Aerospace, Nano materials and technology, cheminformatics, drug design and development etc.
